Although the exact number of missing people in Japan is not known, an increase in companies known as yonigeya reflects a rise in jōhatsu cases. The term yonigeya means “fly-by-night arrangers” and refers to companies that help clients who seek to disappear from their current lives. These companies often employ private investigators, security experts, and counselors to help those trying to run away from difficult or dangerous situations. It is estimated that there are several dozen yonigeya companies operating across Japan.
