Just about 13 kilometers off the coast of England in the North Sea, a small platform rises above the waves. It was originally a military fort called Roughs Tower. The fort was built by the British during World War II to protect Great Britain from Germany. Today, this fort is a micronation known as Sealand. In the 1960s, British Army veteran Roy Bates wanted to set up a radio station that was free from the control of the British government. Eventually, he settled on Roughs Tower, which had been built in international waters.
