In the 20th century, the polygraph test became the most common method of lie detection. It was regularly used for police interrogations as well as interviews for important government positions. The name “polygraph” is a combination of “poly,” meaning multiple body functions being tracked, and “graph,” referring to the moving paper where the results are recorded. During a polygraph test, a person’s pulse, breathing, blood pressure, and perspiration are all monitored.
