Hiccups are a minor inconvenience that almost everyone experiences occasionally. A sudden bout of hiccups can be quite annoying because it makes talking, resting, or even breathing more difficult. Fortunately, in most cases, they are not a serious problem. Hiccups may seem random, but they can be easily explained. They occur because of involuntary spasms of the diaphragm, which is a large and thin muscle located between the chest and abdomen.
